Simple Gifts
Music inspired by folk song

York Musical Society
Conductor: David Pipe
Soloist: John Holland-Avery, Baritone
YMS Orchestra

Folk music, with its memorable melodies and words telling the stories of ordinary people’s lives, has been an inspiration for many composers.

We have chosen Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite and Fantasia on Greensleeves, and John Rutter’s The Sprig of Thyme to represent traditional British music. These pieces include well-known favourites such as ‘The Keel Row’ and‘The Miller of Dee’.

Crossing the seas, Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs – including the popular Shaker song ‘Simple Gifts’ – are based on American folk, religious and political themes. In contrast, Gustav Holst’s Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda explore ancient Indian religious music.

Sung in English

York Minster is the appropriately magnificent setting for this monumental choral work, described by Sir Simon Rattle as ‘one of those achievements that we don’t see again in the history of humanity’.

Based on St Matthew’s Gospel, Part One tells the story of the betrayal and arrest of Jesus; Part Two turns darker and softer as it depicts his trial, crucifixion and burial. The Evangelist, sung by a tenor, narrates the Gospel text, while the words of Jesus are sung by the bass. A double chorus and orchestra, an additional ‘ripieno’ soprano chorus and four additional soloists combine to make this a must-hear masterpiece.

Summer Concert

This concert, which will take place in Münster, Germany, marks the 25th anniversary of the twinning of YMS with the Münster Philharmonischer Chor, as well as their 50th anniversary. The programme includes Brahms’ Schicksalslied and Alt Rhapsodie, Beethoven’s Chorfantasie, and will conclude with Elgar’s The Music Makers as a tribute to the long-standing partnership of our two choirs.
