Joining the choir
Would you like to join York Musical Society as a singing member?
We usually sing three concerts a year under our conductor David Pipe. Most of our concerts take place in York Minster; in June 2016 we sang for the first time in York Barbican. We also hold an annual choral workshop, open to other singers as well as YMS members.
Since September 2016, rehearsals are on Monday evenings, from 7.30 to 9.30pm in the Shepherd Hall, St Olave’s Middle School (near Bootham, York). There are breaks at Christmas, Easter and during the summer, generally coinciding with school terms.
To join the choir, you need moderate sight-reading ability and a love of singing! You need to commit to attending rehearsals regularly and to doing some ‘homework’ to ensure you learn your part thoroughly. Members are expected to miss no more than one concert each year and to attend at least two-thirds of the rehearsals for each concert. There is an annual membership subscription and a student discount is available.
If you are interested in joining, you will be invited to attend one of our rehearsals informally before an audition is arranged for you. New members’ auditions are quite short and our Conductor usually does them in a side room at the rehearsal hall.
More than forty new members have joined in the past year, including a number of younger singers. This is a mixed-age choir, and while it has a number of longstanding members, secondary school or college students who can only commit to a few seasons are also very welcome. Singing with YMS is a very enjoyable opportunity to broaden your knowledge and experience of music.
