An invitation...

This is an invitation to all who love singing, whether experienced or inexperienced, to join with York Musical Society (the country's oldest choral society) in a performance of Handel's Messiah.

The purpose is to raise money towards the York Minster Fund at the same time as sharing with each other the thrill of singing this magnificent work in the glorious setting of the Minster.

PLEASE COME AND SING
with York Musical Society

Soprano - Elin Manahan Thomas
Counter-tenor - Robert Ogden
Tenor - Nicholas Mulroy
Baritone - Eamonn Dougan
The Boyce Chamber Orchestra
Conductor - Philip Moore

The main rehearsals will be on the day of the performance in York Minster. Any singers who are able to rehearse with us before that day are invited to join us on Tuesday 25th November and Friday 5th December, 7.30-9.30pm, in the Minster (access via the Chapter House Yard).

We welcome applications to sing from individuals as well as from choirs. Details of choruses to be included will be sent out with singers' tickets when they are distributed in the autumn. Singers will derive the greatest pleasure from this event if they do some individual preparation before rehearsals start.

10.30 am Morning rehearsal commences
12.00 am Break for lunch
1.00 pm Afternoon rehearsal commences

From 4.00 pm singers are invited to relax, eat and change in The Minster School prior to the concert.

Singers to provide their own food and drink for the day - not to be consumed within the Minster.

Singers to provide and wear their own formal concert dress. Choirs are invited to wear their usual concert uniform. Everyone else is re-quested to wear clothes befitting the occasion. Please note, ladies especially, that the Minster can be very cold, so we recommend wearing a number of warm layers!

Seating information

The massed choirs will be seated in the body of the Nave with sopranos and altos to the front, tenors and basses to the rear, facing the East End. Each singer will be allocated a numbered seat according to voice part, alongside friends or members of their own choirs if this request has been submitted on a single application form.

The Conductor will stand at the East End of the Nave facing the singers and orchestra, which will be placed between him and the singers. Soloists will also be facing the chorus. The audience will be placed in unreserved seats in the side aisles. On the day of the concert, for both rehearsals and performance, singers should enter the Minster via the South Transept.

Audience Tickets, £12.00, will be available to singers before going on sale to the general public, if they are booked at the same time as the singers' tickets. Audience tickets will be available to the public from October 24th.

York Musical Society

YMS is a mixed-voice choir with over 125 members. It was founded in 1765 and through-out its history has enjoyed close links with York Minster. The present conductor is Philip Moore who from 1983 until July this year has been the Organist and Master of the Music at the Minster, succeeding Dr Francis Jackson in this post. All York Musical Society concerts take place in the Minster. Having enjoyed the privilege of singing in this magnificent building so regularly, YMS is now keen to play its part in helping to raise funds towards the current Minster Appeal. Profits from the concert will be donated to this worthy cause.

It gives the Society great pleasure to invite others from the community to join in this very special Come and Sing Messiah, especially those who rarely get the chance to sing a large-scale work with a full chorus. Perhaps some who join us at this event will be inspired to apply for membership of YMS, a friendly choir that meets each Tuesday at 7.30 in the Central Methodist Church Hall in St Saviourgate.

For details of membership contact: Lesley Wilson, Tel: 01347 848272. York Musical Society also hopes that singers committed to other choirs will enjoy joining with us on this occasion and we will acknowledge their contribution by recording the name of their choir in the printed programme.

We very much hope that all singers will encourage non-singing friends to come and form a supportive audience for this event.
