Elgar: The Dream of Gerontius

York Musical Society performed Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius at York Minster on Saturday 6 June 2026, under the direction of Musical Director David Pipe, as part of the Society’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

Setting texts by Cardinal Newman, Gerontius follows the soul of a dying man through death and into the presence of God — a sweeping meditation on mortality, faith, and hope that stands as one of the crowning achievements of the English choral tradition.

The performance featured tenor Sam Furness in the title role, mezzo-soprano Kate Symonds-Joy as The Angel, and baritone James Cleverton as the Priest and Angel of the Agony, with the YMS Orchestra and the Ebor Singers. In a special tribute to the Society’s long-standing partnership with York’s twin city, the Philharmonischer Chor Münster joined YMS on stage — the two choirs having first sung together in 1993 to mark fifty years since Allied bombs fell on Münster’s cathedral.

Reviewer Tim Robinson described the performance as “intensely passionate, strangely driven, deeply spiritual,” and wrote that “our great choral tradition remains in confident hands.”
