York Musical Society performed Haydn's Nelson Mass and Vivaldi's Gloria at St Lawrence Parish Church, York, on 8 November 2025, under the direction of David Pipe. The two works make a natural pairing — Vivaldi's Gloria is a bright, exuberant setting brimming with energy, while Haydn's Nelson Mass, composed in 1798, is one of his most dramatic and turbulent, written in the shadow of the Napoleonic Wars. Both were performed with organ and timpani accompaniment in place of a full orchestra, with soloists soprano Ellie Miles-Kingston and mezzo-soprano Holly Gowen.
Reviewer Martin Dreyer described David Pipe as "a charismatic conductor with a knack for motivating his charges" and noted that the choir delivered "considerable conviction to the start of the 'Credo', with bold lines in all voices."
